Carter Beauford

What do you guys think about Carter Beauford?? I love every note that he plays... it?s always intresting and new... and always fits perfectly to Dave Matthews Bands songs. Great music... even thought it`s popular [img]wink.gif[/img]

man I really love all the cliche pre-conceived notions that "if its mainstream IT sucks automatically", kinda silly considering most of you probably grew listening to mainstream(or popular stuff)in your times and then moved on to fusion(while still being rockers at heart-just read the Zeppelin-Bonham thread NUFF SAID)

As far as Carter's playing goes, I love his feel and touch(the Hudson DVD "Making Music" ft/Victor Wooten, there's a section where he explains the different influences on sum tracks which include Copeland/Gadd/Porcaro if I remember correctly. He did some amazing work on "Crash" and "Before These Crowded Streets". "Ride In, Ride Out" (or something like that) has some amazing playing on it, same with "Halloween"(Live w/Drum Solo) and "Ants Marching". Great fills, double bass and it's all tasty and playing within the concept of what the songs gives you, its nice to get away and just listen to someone play in straight 4 playing a cool beat and lets face it, the general public could care less how fast a drummer can do double stroke rolls and flam paraddidles.. I don't know much about the guy, but on the Dave Mathews track I've heard, he's killing! He must have a huge kit as there are obviously quite a few splashes and a few jam blocks and perc too. It didn't seem to get in the way of things though, he plays with groove and taste.

Neither his sound nor his vocabulary appeal to me personally. His drums just sound so processed. I know he plays a recording custom. Perhaps he's going for the Weckl sound of the 80s. That's all.

Carter is a great player! The thing is though, that I can't see him outside of the DMB. His style may be too signature?
That being said, I really love his toms and Hi-hat work is really unique. As a right handed player, trying to approach that feel of his is a real challenge. I have considered setting up left handed just to try some of his stuff.

I have Carter's double VHS set. Amazing technical, groove oriented playing! It makes me wish I had stayed switched over to the "open" playing style where the left hand plays the hi hats and the ride....

Classic! I think Carter has one of the best drum sounds around. (2nd only to Weckl)

Beauford is a GREAT player... he is integral in helping to make that overall DMB sound... in the hands of a less-funky & linear drummer, it would be a disappointment; i.e., if 1 of "the kiddie's other popular bands' drummers" played w/ DMB [several come to mind; i'll save the slams ;=) ], it would've sounded/been like a fart in a diver's helmet....
